  • The image of the west coast electro era was pretty much dominated by the sounds of the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, LA Dream Team, Unknown DJ, Egyptian Lover, and the likes. However avid record collectors and electro fans are quick to point out the many singles that have virtually slipped through the cracks of time over the years. The Brothers Supreme’s “We Can’t Be Held Back” is a perfect example of an outstanding song coming out of California in 1985 off a short-lived record label that went relatively unheard at its time. Originally released in 1985 off the Los Angeles-based Street Talk label, The Brothers Supreme’s production and engineer staff used their past work with Rappers Rapp Disco Co. to re-release the single on the label a year later. In both instances the single found little attention outside of the west coast hip-hop circles and consequently didn’t receive much future pressings. The resurgence of the 1980’s hip-hop and electro scene brought to light many of these hidden jewels on wax. “We Can’t Be Held Back” brings to the ears a wicked electro groove with a great indication of outstanding production. What makes this single so sought after (besides its limited pressing) is the great electro feel that the track brings out. Everything from the melodic and bouncy bass line to succulent synthesized keyboard jabs to the raw Roland drum sound to the wicked vocoder chorus to the almost hidden cowbells blend together so elegantly that it almost sets the standard for what a premier electro-rap track should sound like. Online auctions have priced this record from prices ranging from $80 to well over $200 on recent occasion.
